High Tech Trash
Hopefully everyone knows we live in a world where electronics are ever increasing in our daily lives, from TVs, DVD recorders, copiers, printers, computers, monitoring systems in medical industries, CRTs on machinery, circuits controlling systems in our cars, cell phones, and on and on. Electronics Waste is growing 2-3 times faster than any other waste stream (i.e. paper, yard waste).
Between 2000 and 2007, as many as 500 million personal computers will become obsolete and entered the municipal solid waste stream. Old electronics contain heavy metals that leach into the ground and into the water supply. Many of the materials in old electronics can be recovered and recycled.
I found a really good article on the National Geographic website located at http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2008/01/high-tech-trash/recycling-text . Please take time to read the article and look at the great photos they have.
Things you can do with your E-waste:
-
If the equipment still works, donate it instead of trashing.
-
Some technical schools will take equipment so students can use them to learn.
-
UNICOR and the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality join for “PROJECT GREEN-FED,” an e-scrap recycling program for all Arkansas residents at zero cost. Visit their website at www.unicor.gov/recycling/greenfed
-
Many computer companies now have take back programs for their equipment. Visit:
